Why am I receiving so many answering machines if my Answering Machine Detection is already checked?

AMD is heavily reliant on the response at the other end of the line. This is mainly because once the call connects it is hard to predict the nature of the conversation, be it is a live person or a machine. AMD then becomes an exercise in predicting human behavior. For example, the average person answers their phone "Hello?" and waits for the other party to respond, as an answering machine usually has a run-on message "This is Bob, it’s your dime and my time and you are wasting both, leave your name and number and I might get back to you ". The AMD has to take this and other things into consideration when deciphering between human and machine and typically manages close to 80% accuracy. Here are some common reasons for the 20% that may get through:

  1. The call is answered by a live person, but the person does not say "Hello"
  2. The call is answered by a live person, but there's either too much background noise or the microphone/receiver has bad noise canceling.
  3. The call is answered by an answering machine, but the message has several long pauses or is too short.
  4. The number goes to a PBX with multiple levels of voice mail prompts
